KAHURANGI KI KAIPARA MEETS FINLAND 2010
The Kahurangi Ki Kaipara kapa haka group has been invited to perform in a folk arts festival in Finland next June. Tutor Joe Timoti says it follows their consistent success and hard work, considering they belong to a small whanau from Ngati Whatua Nga Rima O Kaipara. Made up mainly of children and youth, the group has a growing reputation for a competitive edge, particularly against older and established kapa haka groups. “We are slowly but surely coming of age. Long may the dream continue,” Mr Timoti says. He thanks Helensville and nor-west residents for supporting the dress rehearsal dinner to fundraise for the groups events. The groups busy schedule has included taking part as reigning junior and intermediate champions at the coronation of Maori King Tuheitia. The event at Turangawaewae Marae involved the top senior kapa haka groups from New Zealand. The junior group started proceedings followed by the Auckland Anglican Maori choir, one of the oldest kapa haka groups founded by legendary tutor Reverend Kingi Ihaka. The intermediate group was also well received. During the Te Huinga Cultural Festival at Waitakere College, Kahurangi Ki Kaipara were among 33 groups competing in the kohanga reo, midget, junior and intermediate sections. Up against kura kaupapa and the top 10 performers from Polyfest, both the junior and intermediate groups took third place. “I had told them Id be very happy if they made it into the top five,” Mr Timoti says.
